DeMint endorses Romney for president

DeMint endorses Romney for president
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Sen. Jim DeMint (news, bio, voting record) has endorsed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the 2008 presidential race, according to a letter the South Carolina senator is sending to state RepublicansThe endorsement letter, obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday, marks a split between the two Republican senators representing South Carolina, which holds the first southern presidential primary.
Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) of Arizona is favored by Sen. Lindsey Graham (news, bio, voting record), South Carolina's senior senator.
DeMint's split is seen by some as a move to find a conservative alternative to McCain, but it's not that much of a surprise.
DeMint was elected in 2004.
McCain and Romney have both set up exploratory committees and started raising money for presidential bids but haven't formally declared they're running.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Democratic presidential hopeful Tom Vilsack on Tuesday called on Congress to block funds for additional troops in Iraq but expressed misgivings about using the power of the purse to reduce U.S. forces.
"I think it's one way of absolutely putting that on the table," Vilsack told The Associated Press. "Mr. President, you don't have a blank check. Congress basically made a mistake by giving him a blank check at the beginning of this process. Now they are basically saying you don't get a second blank check."
Vilsack's comments came as President Bush was expected to announce on Wednesday his decision to send 20,000 more troops to Iraq.
"I'm not willing to suggest we have a cutting off of funds that would really put people in greater danger than they are today," Vilsack said.
In one of his last acts as Iowa governor, Vilsack asked state lawmakers to take a stand against the war in Iraq.
"This war has cost us a lot," Vilsack told a joint session of the Iowa Legislature as he gave his eighth and final Condition of the State address. "It has hollowed out our military, it has in my view weakened our National Guard and put our nation at risk."
"Now the president and the Congress are poised to make a big mistake even bigger by escalating America's involvement by adding more troops and investing more resources," said Vilsack, who announced his candidacy last November.
