EDWARDS IN 'MAC' ATTACK
By GEOFF EARLE
January 1, 2007 -- WASHINGTON - Former Sen. John Edwards - looking beyond Hillary Rodham Clinton and other potential Democratic rivals to taunt the leading Republican candidate for president - slammed Sen. John McCain yesterday for pushing a troop surge in Iraq.
The North Carolina Democrat said the Arizona Republican was mistaken in urging President Bush to send in up to 30,000 more troops to try to stem rising sectarian violence.
"What I would call now the McCain Doctrine . . . I think he's dead wrong about this," Edwards told on ABC's "This Week."
Edwards also hinted that he would be more "electable" in 2008 than chief potential rivals Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama.
