The Spanish-language film, which other awards bodies have mainly chosen to honour in the best foreign languages sector, faced competition from Cristi Puiu's The Death of Mr Lazarescu and Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima.However Del Toro lost out on the best director gong to Paul Greengrass, the film-maker behind the September 11 docudrama United 93.
Helen Mirren, who looks a firm favourite for Oscar success, was once again named best actress to add to her Golden Globe and victories in polls for the Boston, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco critics' associations. Her film, The Queen, also took best screenplay for Peter Morgan. Forest Whitaker was honoured with the best actor award for The Last King of Scotland, Kevin MacDonald's tale of the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. Mark Wahlberg took best supporting actor for The Departed, while Meryl Streep took the corresponding actress' award for her performances in The Devil Wears Prada and A Prairie Home Companion. Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth won best documentary of the year and the society also honoured David Lynch's Inland Empire for its experimental use of digital video.
The National Society makes its decisions at its annual meeting at Sardi's restaurant in New York. It often chooses different winners from the Academy Awards, which this year takes place on February 25.
