Dame Elizabeth said she has written a cheque for $2,100 (£1,070) - the legal limit - to Clinton's campaign fund.
The 74-year-old actress, who starred in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, described the New York senator as "savvy and a smart".
Dame Elizabeth is one of Hollywood's leading Aids activists and supporters of liberal causes.
In a statement, she said: "I have contributed to Sen Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign because she has a mind of her own and a very strong one at that.

"I like the way she thinks. She is very savvy and a smart leader with years of experience in government, diplomacy and politics."
Dame Elizabeth is one of the first of Hollywood's politically influential elite to declare her support.
Clinton's main rival for the Democratic nomination, Senator Barack Obama, has already been backed by DreamWorks studio founder Jeffrey Katzenberg.
