A spokesperson for former Vice President Al Gore denied rumors in an Asian newspaper about the Oscar-winner's presidential plans in 2008.
"He is heavily booked with work and engagements through the Fall," said Kalee Kreider, a spokesperson for Al Gore, when contacted via e-mail by RAW STORY. "His position on 2008 has not changed."
Gore, who won an Oscar this year for his global warming-centered documentary An Inconvenient Truth, was said in a Taiwanese newspaper to have canceled all events for the next six months in preparation for a presidential run next year.
"Former US vice president Al Gore will not be able to make it to Taiwan this September to address the issue of global warming, Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Tien Chiu-chin said yesterday," according to an item in the Taipei Times. Tien, who invited Gore to visit Taiwan to promote awareness on global warming, told reporters yesterday that she received an e-mail from the Harry Walker Agency, which has the exclusive right to arrange Gore's speeches, saying that Gore had canceled all his scheduled events in the next six months. The visit to Taiwan had been postponed to next year, she added. Tien said the reason for the cancelation [sic] was that Gore was considering a presidential bid."
Kreider said there was no truth to the report and that the Taiwanese paper had not contacted her office for comment.
The Harry Walker Agency was not available at press time for comment.
The Tennessee native, who served alongside President Bill Clinton from 1992-2000 and was defeated in the 2000 presidential race after the Supreme Court stopped a recount of ballots in Florida, is currently preparing for a series of concert events around the world called Live Earth.
Several conservative blogs, including the National Review Online's Corner and Captain's Quarters reported on the Taipei Times item uncritically.
"Cancelling [sic] six months of commitments clears him throught [sic] at least the start of the primary elections next year," wrote the latter's Ed Morrisey. "Of course, this could just be Gore's way of dumping the Taiwan appearance in a way that doesn't burn bridges."

Ex-campaign manager Donna Brazile, former policy director Elaine Kamarck, former media strategist Tad Devine, ex-traveling chief of staff Michael Feldman and former spokesmen Chris Lehane and Jano Cabrera shared their views with The Hill. None of these former advisers are helping a Democratic presidential campaign.
Feldman, who maintains close ties with the former vice president, said he is staying out of the nomination battle, but not because of any private intimations from Gore.
Feldman said his neutrality in the primary is “certainly not because the former vice president or any of his surrogates have asked me not to.”
“I’m fully focused on my job,” said Feldman, a partner at Glover Park Group. “I’m fully focused on my full-time job. I take him at his word on this and nothing he has said privately has differed from what he has said publicly. He is not planning to run for president.”
Gore’s closest political confidants, Carter Eskew and Peter Knight, as might be expected, have refrained from lining up behind any presidential campaign.
Former Gore strategists Bob Shrum, Michael Whouley and Monica Dixon are also staying neutral in the primary, said members of Gore’s circle. Whouley and Dixon did not respond to requests for comment.
A few senior operatives from the 2000 campaign, which fell 537 votes short of now-President Bush, have allied themselves with Democratic contenders. William Daley, Gore’s campaign chairman, supports Obama. Ron Klain, a senior strategiest in 2000, has aligned himself with Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.).
Former Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) has attracted the highest-profile former Gore strategists. Harrison Hickman, Gore’s pollster, David Ginsberg, Gore’s researcher, and Nick Baldick, who played a leading role in the 2000 campaign, are assisting Edwards.
Sarah Bianchi, Gore’s former deputy policy director, has provided advice to Clinton’s campaign but does not have a formal role and would be available to join a Gore campaign under the right circumstances.
Brazile, who spoke to Gore in March about his potential presidential ambitions, said there is no secret agreement among Gore’s allies to wait for his re-entry into presidential politics.
“There’s no conspiracy about top Gore people waiting it out,” she said. “ I can’t give you a clue why we’re on the sidelines. We all have our reasons.”
Brazile said she was an early proponent of Gore running in 2008 but quieted her advocacy after Gore expressed little interest.
“I’ve seen him and talked to him and I’ve seen no sign,” she said. “I said that I think he should run but, after talking to him in March, I see no evidence, no sign…. So I’ve stopped talking about him.”
Brazile noted that she and many Gore advisers stayed neutral in the 2004 Democratic primary as well. She said those who became involved in Sen. John Kerry’s (D-Mass.) presidential race, such as Shrum and Whouley, did so because of connections to the candidate or his home state.
Speculation about a potential Gore bid intensified after “An Inconvenient Truth,” Gore’s film about global warming, won an Oscar earlier this year. Since then, however, sources close to Gore say the chances of him running have fallen significantly. One source said the chances of a run are close to nil.
Judging from public records of campaign contributions, a large number of Gore’s top fundraisers have not yet settled on a preferred candidate. Ten of Gore’s 25 top fundraisers in 2000 have not given any money to a presidential campaign this year, according to a review of campaign records. An 11th, Charles Bone of Nashville, gave a mere $500 to Clinton.
(The Center for Responsive Politics has posted a list of donors who raised $100,000 or more for Gore in 2000.)
Lehane, Gore’s former spokesman, said he is spending most of his time changing diapers on his 7-month-old son and meeting the demands of his California-based consulting business.
He also said that while many of the most talented Democratic advisers, fundraisers and field operators have already signed up with presidential campaigns, a campaign launched later this fall would still find top-quality people to hire.
“There’s an awful lot of talent across the country and in the states in particular,” said Lehane. “I’m one of those people who is a big believer that a talented candidate makes talented staff.”

Poll finds Wisconsin voters give Giuliani, Gore highest marks
MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin Republicans have a better impression of former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani than they do of hometown political giant Tommy Thompson, a poll released Tuesday showed.
Instead of asking respondents who they support for president in 2008, the University of Wisconsin Survey Center's Badger Poll asked for impressions of three front-runners in each party, as well as Thompson and Al Gore.
Giuliani had the highest favorable rating among Republicans at 64 percent, beating out Thompson at 58 percent. John McCain came in a distant third at 16 percent.
Thompson, governor for 14 years before leaving in 2001 to serve President Bush as Health and Human Services Secretary, is running an underdog campaign for president against better-funded and well-known candidates including Giuliani, McCain and Mitt Romney. Romney came in fourth with a 4 percent favorable impression in the poll.
Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who is flirting with a run on the Republican side, was not included in the poll. When the poll was put together in early May, his potential candidacy had not caught on as much as it has now, said Chad Kniss, project director at the survey center.
Speaking of unannounced candidates, Gore pulled the best numbers from Democrats even though he's not in the race. He was viewed favorably by 62 percent of survey respondents, followed by New York Sen. Hillary Clinton with 60 percent. Illinois Sen. Barack Obama came in third with 57 percent followed by John Edwards at 54 percent.
Poll authors said given that the Wisconsin primary is still eight months away, the poll focused on getting people's impressions of the candidates instead of looking for a leader or possible winner.
The random telephone poll of 502 people between June 7 and June 15 had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Wisconsin's primary is Feb. 19 and the general election next year is on Nov. 4.

WASHINGTON -- Hillary Rodham Clinton is the national front-runner in the eight-person Democratic presidential primary. Yet when it comes to the state-by-state contests that will decide the nomination, the candidates are practically all over the map.
In some critical states, Clinton is trailing her rivals.
John Edwards is the favorite in the initial state of Iowa. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois is giving chase in several states and has as much money as Clinton to fund a tough challenge. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is making a play in states where his Hispanic heritage could establish a bond. Sens. Chris Dodd of Connecticut and Joe Biden of Delaware are trying to break through in targeted states where they feel they have appeal.
And if former Vice President Al Gore gets in the race, it would be turned upside down.
Winning the nomination comes down to one magic number - 2,182. That's the number of delegates needed to secure the nomination in Denver Aug. 25-28, 2008.
Fundraising is critical because money pays for the staff to organize key states and the television advertising that influences voters. Clinton and Obama each brought in about $25 million in the first quarter, putting them in a strong position. Edwards, the 2004 vice presidential nominee, raised $14 million.
The primary calendar and number of delegates are still in flux, but here's how the early states are shaping up seven months before the voting begins in Iowa.

The state has new prominence in presidential politics with an early caucus. Organized labor is expected to be a strong force, led by the Culinary Workers union that represents casino and hotel workers. Every Democratic candidate has been giving the union special attention, with Clinton, Obama and Edwards appearing within days of each other for rallies during contract negotiations. Clinton boasts a strong organization in the state headed by Rory Reid, the son of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Clark County Commission Chairman. Clinton recently won the endorsement of Dina Titus, the popular state Senate Democratic leader who narrowly lost a bid for governor in 2006. Obama's volunteers have been going door-to-door, the Clinton campaign has been running phone banks and Edwards has made the most visits of the three. Richardson, from nearby New Mexico, also frequently travels to the state, taking advantage of his fluency in Spanish to woo the state's significant Hispanic population. Exit polls showed 10 percent of Hispanics turned out to vote in 2004, a number likely to jump next year.

The state is Clinton's to lose. She has locked up most of New Hampshire's institutional power and recent polls show her leading with more than a third of Democratic support. This is the state where her husband staged his comeback in 1992 and the Clintons have many friends there still. Obama is in second place but isn't ceding the state - young Obama volunteers armed with maps are campaigning door-to-door on a daily basis and he is drawing large crowds on his visits. All the campaigns are targeting independents, who can vote in either party's primary and have been trending Democratic in recent elections. Edwards recently dispatched some campaign veterans to New Hampshire, including abortion rights activist Kate Michelman, and plans to launch a more aggressive push in the state in coming weeks. His focus will be economic issues. Richardson climbed to 10 percent support in the most recent polls, fueled by his successful ad campaign.

SOUTH CAROLINA - Jan. 29 (45 delegates)
Several Democrats claim this state. It is Obama's best chance for victory among the earliest states, with black voters traditionally comprising nearly half the primary turnout. Obama has hundreds of volunteers in the state and his campaign plans to pair those grass-roots efforts with heavy television advertising. A Mason-Dixon poll this month showed Obama pulling in a third of Democratic voters, compared to a quarter for Clinton. Clinton is not ceding the black vote, however, and benefits from her husband's immense popularity in the black community. Edwards was born there and won the primary in 2004. He's focusing on rural and poverty outreach this time to keep it in his column, although he was at just 12 percent in the latest poll. A potential dark horse is Biden, who has spent considerable time in the state and has won several important endorsements from local black leaders.

Florida will be the first large, ethnically diverse state to host an early voting contest; it's also a key fundraising stop for presidential hopefuls. Most candidates have been slow to build campaign organizations here as Florida Democrats sort out a dispute with the national party over the earlier primary date and possible penalties. Clinton, who has a strong lead in recent Florida polls, will play hard in the state that decided the 2000 election, and Obama will do so as well. Both candidates have already visited the state for numerous fundraisers. The decision is more complicated for Edwards, who will likely have less money to spend than the two front-runners and is counting on a strong showing in his native South Carolina the same day. Florida's large Hispanic population also makes it fertile territory for Richardson.

This is the first day that states other than Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina are allowed to hold their contests under party rules. And the states have been lining up to go on Feb. 5, perhaps as many as 25.
The national primary day is creating headaches for the campaigns as they try to figure out where to spend time and money. Split decisions in those early contests - Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina - could truly scramble the dynamics of 2008's biggest multistate contest.
The major prize is California (370 delegates), where Clinton and Obama have already been the toast of numerous Hollywood fundraisers. In a state so vast, candidates typically rely on expensive television advertising instead of traditional retail campaigning. But Clinton has hired an experienced campaign staff and has lined up key endorsements including Antonio Villaraigosa, the popular Los Angeles mayor. The campaign also is assembling a strategy to target the state's large number of absentee voters, many of whom will begin casting their ballots before the Iowa and New Hampshire contests.
Clinton holds a natural advantage in her adopted home state of New York (232), which also hosts its primary. So does neighboring New Jersey (107), and the state's fundraising powerhouse Sen. Bob Menendez has lined up with Clinton after much courting from the field. Obama's home state of Illinois (153) is poised to move to Feb. 5.
Edwards, a North Carolinian, is expressing confidence that he will win several Southern states casting votes that day, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Missouri and Oklahoma, although significant numbers of black voters in some of those state could give the edge to Obama or Clinton. Also voting on Feb. 5 are the home states of Richardson, Dodd and Biden, although they have smaller numbers of delegates at stake.
