Bayh, Hillary Clinton Travel to Iraq
(AP) Senator Evan Bayh is headed to Iraq this weekend, along with New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Their trip comes as the rest of Congress engages in a fierce debate over President Bush's plan to send over 21,000 additional troops to salvage the U.S. effort there.
They are to meet with top Iraqi officials and U.S. military commanders. They will also travel to Afghanistan.
Bayh stressed that he wants to meet with top Iraqi officials and judge for himself how serious they are about using their own troops and government to stabilize the country.
He says that the U.S. needs to take away Iraq's "security blanket.''
New York Republican Representative John McHugh is also on the trip. All three are members of armed services committees
