Mattea talks global warming in Orem

Mattea talks global warming in Orem
JEREMY DUDA - Daily Herald When Kathy Mattea first heard former Vice President Al Gore speak about global warming a year ago, she couldn't sleep for two nights. The Grammy Award-winning country singer decided to become part of the solution and on Wednesday she urged Utah County residents to do the same.
Mattea, one of hundreds of people enlisted by Gore to give presentations like the one featured in his documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," spoke to a crowd of several dozen people at the Orem City Council chambers, asking people to take action against global warming.
"We as individuals, we do have the power. We have the power to change the world if we step forward and take an action. And it doesn't take a very big action if we all act," she said.
Most electricity comes from coal power, and 40 percent of the electricity used in the United States goes toward lighting, said Mattea, who urged people to find ways to conserve electricity.
One small action Mattea suggested is using compact fluorescent bulbs instead of regular light bulbs. If every household in the United States replaced one light bulb with a fluorescent compact bulb, she said, it would have the same effect on the environment as taking 1 million cars off the road.
According to energystar.gov, ENERGY STAR-qualified compact fluorescent bulbs "use at least two-thirds less energy than standard incandescent bulbs to provide the same amount of light, and last up to 10 times longer." ENERGY STAR is a joint effort of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy to save consumers money and "protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices."
Switching to compact fluorescent bulbs was one of the first actions Mattea said she took after hearing Gore's speech.
"Even if I don't do one other thing, I have become part of the solution. I have taken action," she said.
The light bulbs were just one example Mattea gave. She spoke of hybrid cars -- she is the proud owner of a Toyota Prius, which she said gets 50 miles to the gallon -- and renewable energy. There is no single, "magic bullet," solution to global warming, Mattea said. But there are many smaller things people can do, more like a "magic buckshot."
Mattea's hits include "Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses," "Come From the Heart," "Goin' Gone" and "Burnin' Old Memories." She also appeared in the movie "Maverick."
