Election 2008: Romney Enters White House Race, Trails All Democrats
Mitt Romney (R) filed papers last week to formally begin his run for the White House, but a new Rasmussen Reports poll shows how much of an uphill fight it will be for the former Governor of Massachusetts. Romney is viewed favorably by just 29% of Americans and unfavorably by 35%. Another 35% don't know enough to have an opinion one way or the other.

Still, those numbers are a bit better than a month ago when just 27% held a favorable opinion of Romney and 39% held the opposite perspective.
In match-ups against leading Democrats, Romney now trails John Edwards 54% to 32%. That's a bigger gap than the 50% to 37% lead Edwards enjoyed in our December poll. Romney also trails another potential Democrat, Barack Obama 48% to 35%. A month ago, Obama led 47% to 38%.
Edwards, who announced his own formal entry into the White House sweepstakes during the week between Christmas and New Year's, is viewed more favorably today than he was a month ago. Fifty-four percent (54%) of America's Likely Voters offer a favorable assessment of the former North Carolina Senator. That's up from 47% before his announcement. Thirty-seven percent (37%) have an unfavorable opinion.
In head-to-head match-ups, Edwards leads Romney and Mike Huckabee (R) but trails John McCain (R) and Rudy Giuliani (R).
Opinion concerning Illinois Senator Barack Obama has remained stable, 52% favorable and 31% unfavorable. The best-selling author leads Romney, Newt Gingrich (R) and Mike Huckabee (R) but trails John McCain (R) and Rudy Giuliani (R).
Romney trails in head-to-head match-ups against every Democrat in polls by Rasmussen Reports. This includes Senator Hillary Clinton, former Vice-President Al Gore, and former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack along with Edwards and Obama.
