Obama, Durbin voice Katrina concern
Obama, Durbin voice Katrina concern WASHINGTON Illinois' senators are voicing concern over how the victims of Katrina have been shortchanged by the government.
Senator Barack Obama, who is expected to announce his candidacy for president next month, declared that the American people "have made it pretty clear, I think, that it was an embarrassment to our country and that we betrayed our own citizens."
The Chicago Democrat said as a member of a Senate subcommittee on Homeland Security, he will join Senator Joe Lieberman and Senator Susan Collins in visiting New Orleans Monday as part of an investigation of what can be learned from the 2005 hurricane's aftermath.
Senator Dick Durbin, the Senate's second-highest ranking Democrat and a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said Congress needs to appropriate more money to deal with New Orleans' problems and an administration in Washington with the "will to do."
