Stars Align for the Santa Barbara Film Festival

Stars Align for the Santa Barbara Film Festival
The race for Oscar is onBy: Matt CotaTuesday, January 23, 2007
The race for Oscar is on.
Early this morning, the Academy Award nominations were announced. Over the next two weeks, 35 of those nominees will be walking the red carpet in Santa Barbara. Action News' Matt Cota tells us why.
Helen Mirren leads the list of nominees for Best Actress for her performance in "The Queen." In the Best Actor category, Forest Whitaker is nominated for "The Last King of Scotland." He'll be competing with fellow nominee Will Smith, the star of "The Pursuit of Happyness."
Who will take home an Oscar? That's up to the 3,000 voting members of the Academy -- more than 200 of whom live in Santa Barbara County, which is one of the reasons why so many Oscar contenders have already RSVPd to the Santa Barbara Film Festival.
"For the next three weeks, you want to get out there and be seen, schmooze ... it is almost like a political campaign ... almost," says Festival President Roger Durling.
Durling says it's all about timing. Before he moved the dates of the festival to coincide with the Academy Award nominations, he used to have to beg Hollywood stars to come to Santa Barbara. Now, they call him.
One month before the Academy Awards, every nominee wants to be seen on the red carpet. And Durling is more than happy to roll it out.
"You have to have a gimmick," says Durling. "You have to have a niche for yourself. You have to have an identity, something that people will know what the Santa Barbara Film Festival is all about."
That identity is quickly coming into focus: as a place where Hollywood's brightest stars come visit before taking home Oscar.
Among the 35 nominees appearing at the Santa Barbara Film Festival are Helen Mirren ("The Queen"), Will Smith ("The Pursuit of Happyness"), Forest Whitaker ("The Last King of Scotland"), Al Gore ("An Inconvenient Truth"), Sacha Baron Cohen ("Borat"), Jennifer Hudson ("Dreamgirls") and many more.
The Festival starts on Thursday and wraps up on February 4.
