Al Gore plans climate-change mega-concert

Al Gore plans climate-change mega-concert
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Former US vice-president Al Gore and the producers of Live 8 plan to rock the world with top artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Mana in a massive 24-hour global concert to save the planet from global warming. Scheduled to take place at key capitals around the globe on July 7, Live Earth is expected to pull an audience of two billion people across multiple media -- live, online, by broadcast and on wireless devices -- Gore and the promoters said Thursday in a press conference.
Under the banner "Save Our Selves" -- SOS -- the mega-concert will be held "on 7/7/07 across all seven continents" aiming to trigger an international movement to combat global warming.
"In order to solve the climate crisis, we have to reach billions of people," said Gore, an environmental activist and former presidential candidate.
"We are launching SOS and Live Earth to begin a process of communication that will mobilize people all over the world to take action," he said.
Gore has undertaken a one-man crusade warning of the dire threat posed by global warming and his documentary on the subject, "An Inconvenient Truth," is nominated for an Oscar at this year's Academy Awards.
Live shows are planned for Shanghai, Sydney, Johannesburg, and London, and yet-undecided sites in Brazil, Japan, the United States, and possibly other countries.
Producing the massive project will fall to Kevin Wall, credited with the immense success of the 2005 Live 8 global concert to raise awareness about world poverty.
The event will feature more than 100 headliner artists, including on the initial list Red Hot Chili Peppers, Faith Hill, Snoop Dogg, Paolo Nutini, Pharrell, Enrique Iglesias, and Black Eyed Peas.
"We're engaging them and everyone in between," Wall said.
Wall's Control Room production company will put on the events on an eco-friendly basis designed to be carbon-neutral, avoiding any net emissions that would aggravate global warming.
Planners say the events will involve all renewable energy sources, biodegradable plastics and energy-saving devices. The travel of Live Earth artists and staff will be offset through carbon credits, organizers said in a statement.
The operation was announced launched Thursday at the California Science Center in Los Angeles by Wall and Gore, who in the past three years has become a global apostle in the fight against climate change.
"The climate crisis will only be stopped by an unprecedented and sustained global movement. We hope to jump-start that movement right here, right now, and take it to a new level on July 7, 2007," Gore said Thursday.
"Our climate crisis affects everyone, everywhere, and that's who SOS is aimed at," Wall said.
"Only a global response can conquer our climate crisis. SOS asks all people to Save Our Selves because only we can."
Other artists in the initial list of 25 -- which Wall said would grow to more than 100 -- include Akon, Duran Duran, Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, Bon Jovi and bloc Party.
Concert organizers said that Live Earth will be implemented with "a new Green Event Standard that will become the model for carbon-neutral concerts and other live events in the future."
The global show will be backed by the Alliance for Climate Protection, chaired by Gore, and technology giant Microsoft's MSN giant Internet portal.
